The Drakensburg Mountains.
The Drakensburg Mountains are one
of the most beautiful places I’ve been to in South Africa. We spent four days
trekking there back in 2012.

Rather than one long trek we based
ourselves in an amazing cottage high up in the mountains and each day would
trek different loops always ending up back where we started.

There were multiple routes for all
standards of walker and depending on the direction you went in you could come
across wildly different scenery; from rocky caverns with streams and pools to
stunning views disappearing for miles into the distance.

My preference was always to trek
high and soak up the stunning panoramic vistas on offer.

There are so many different routes
you can take depending on which part of the mountains you stay in, however, if
you are interested in trekking there, from my experience, I can highly
recommend you stay at a place called Top Lodge
and use that as your base. Top
Lodge is only accessible by 4x4 or on foot and is set in stunning scenery. From
there you can trek a wide variety of routes including the famous Cathedral
Peak.
